The City of Bath Male Choir

PRESS RELEASE

21st December 2005

BATH is to have a new male voice choir. The man who will lead it is Grenville Jones, who has taken the Silver Ring Choir of Bath on such an exciting musical journey since being appointed conductor 8 years ago.

The City of Bath Male Choir will be open to men between 16 and 65 and will rehearse once a week. Bath of course has many choirs already, but Grenville is convinced that there is a gap for an all male group.

“ The City once had an Admiralty Choir and there was the Midsomer Norton group. However I feel that there are men who would love to join a choir and experience the thrill of singing together. It is a brilliant hobby.

“Initially I am asking any interested men from across the area – that is Bath, Bristol, West Wilts, Norton Radstock and in the Chew Valley area to contact me on my home number which is 01761 479352 or email me on jonesgrenville@aol.com

“ Members do not have to sight-read music or have any choral experience. A joy in singing is all that is required. I will target our local rugby clubs, businesses and the schools.

“ The first rehearsal will be called to suit everyone so we can all meet up. We will move forward from there. I want a choir of 100 voices and our first concert will be at the end of 2006 here in Bath. The City of Bath Male Choir will set out to entertain its audiences. ”

Grenville ( 57 ) lives at Meadgate, Camerton near Bath and runs his own PR and Golf Publishing business.

He was bought up in a musical family and sang in the 1980s for the barbershop group Five in A Bar who made 3 LPs and numerous TV and Radio broadcasts. He also worked for the BBC in Bristol for while collaborating on a number of music shows.

He became conductor of The Silver Ring Choir in 1997. Since that time he has doubled the number of singers, made 3 CDs and many radio and TV appearances. He was instrumental in bringing The London Welsh Male Choir to Bath as well as the World famous Treorchy Male Choir, with whom he has a long friendship, attending their rehearsals from time to time. He is also a trustee of the Rodolfus Choir, one of the UK’s top youth choirs.

The Silver Ring have hit the headlines through their tours to Europe, Canada, the USA and this year to New Zealand. On Saturday December 17th the Silver Ring welcomed International star Katherine Jenkins to Bath for a sell-out concert in the Bath Forum which was produced by Grenville.

He sees no conflict in conducting two choirs in Bath.

“If anything it will be quite simple. The repertoire is different for a start. One thing is for sure, The City of Bath Male Choir will not sing the same old boring pieces that most choirs churn out. I will be looking for new pieces and a different repertoire. It is going to be great fun, singing is a wonderful hobby, so come and give it a try !”
