HERE is our founder conductor Grenville Jones outside Sydney Opera House – looking forward to the day when The City of Bath Male Choir sing there! Grenville was in Australia for a week in November 2005 following The Silver Ring Choir's concert tour of Singapore and New Zealand.
Grenville is founder conductor of The City of Bath Male Choir. He is pictured below with jazz stars Clare Teal and Jamie Cullum, preparing for a concert with his “other” Choir, the famous Silver Ring Choir of Bath.
As if he is not busy enough, Grenville launched a ladies close-harmony and swing group in October 2006 Stockingtops
Aged 59, Grenville owns a PR and publishing business, including a group of golf magazines, Regional Golf Ltd. Yes, he’s a busy man.
For a number of years in the 80s he sang in the barbershop group Five-in-a-Bar, making records and appearing on many national radio and TV shows including Jim’ll fix it, The Cliff Richard Show and Blue Peter, but he’s lost the badge! Many of the arrangements sung by the quintet were his.
In 1970 he sang with the Silver Ring in the tenor section for three years, and when the Choir was looking for a new conductor in 1997, he put his name forward and was appointed. The Choir then had 35 voices and he set himself a number of targets – one being to increase the number to 90 – which he has achieved.
For a while he worked for the BBC in Bristol and once produced a show in the Colston Hall with Johnny Morris and all the local Male Voice Choirs.
Grenville is a member of the Association of British Choral Directors. Through ABCD he has forged friendships with the famous Rodolfus Choir. He was invited to be a Trustee of Rodolfus by its founder Ralph Allwood in August 2005.
Ralph said: “ If you want a job done, always ask a busy man!” Grenville is working with Ralph on commercial and marketing aspects of Rodolfus and the Eton Choral Courses.
Grenville’s natural musical ability and enthusiasm have taken The Silver Ring Choir on an exciting journey. The decision to start his own male choir developed after Silver Ring concerts with such famous choirs as Treorchy and The London Welsh Male Choir. The Silver Ring are well known through their link with jazz star Jamie Cullum, Jamie's mum sings in The Silver Ring.
In a radio interview one of the Choir’s new members said:
“I have never sung in a choir before but if Grenville’s enthusiasm and talent as a choir leader are anything to go by – the sky is the limit!”
