Picture shows Bath Male Choir performing at The 16th Bacchus Festival (Kansai Male Choir Festival) in Itami
Bath Male Choir received a standing ovation from an audience of over 1500 people when they sang as guests of the Bacchus Festival in Itami City on Monday November 3.
The choir are on a ten day tour of Japan arriving in Kyoto last Saturday November 1. On Sunday they were guests of the owners of a Sake Brewery where they entertained invited guests at the residence of the brewery owner.
The choir had been invited to perform at the prestigious 16th Bacchus Festival which took place in the Itami Concert Hall which is close to Kyoto.
Bath Male Choir founder Grenville Jones said;
“We didn’t realise the importance of the festival which took place in a magnificent concert hall.
“There were over 50 choirs taking part in the one day festival and Bath Male Choir were the last to appear on stage at 5pm, at which time there were over 1500 people in the packed concert hall.
“All of the choirs performing during the day had sung one or two pieces but we had been asked to prepare six items and in the programme for the festival there was a full page write-up with photographs of our choir.
“When we went onto the stage we sang our six pieces with incredible response from the audience and at the end of our allocated time we had two encores, the last one being the folk song that we had learnt to sing in Japanese.
“To say that it brought the house down is an understatement.
“There were some excellent choirs taking part during the day and at the final presentation I was called forward to receive the Itami Trophy. I think our performance was well received!”
Bath Male Choir travel to Tokyo on Wednesday November 5 and will perform two concerts before the end of the week, returning to Bath on Sunday evening November 9.
Back on home territory they will be guests at the National Osteoporosis Society’s Christmas Concert on Saturday November 26 at 7pm. Tickets from Bath Box Office on 01225 463362.
