Bath Male Choir recently visited Brittany – a hugely successful concert organised by Alan Lucas who has a house in Brittany and is a member of the local Rotary Club.
Here is his letter to Grenville....
Dear Grenville,
This is just a short note to thank you and the boys of the Bath Male Choir for giving us such an excellent concert in Brittany on the 7th May. This was the first time our Rotary Club has attempted a concert like this, but it was the most successful fund-raising event we have ever organized, and that was due in large measure to the professionalism of you and the boys.
We were asking a lot of you to entertain an audience that comprised of mainly French but also a substantial proportion of Brits. The Brits were, of course, aware of the choir through your appearances on the BBC’s ‘Last Choir Standing’, but to the French you were an unknown quantity. I can tell you, however, that you now have a substantial fan base in Brittany as was proved by the demand for your CDs after the show. I have had as many, if not more, expressions of thanks for a wonderful evening from the French people who were in the audience as from the British. They say your performance was ‘superbe’, ‘magnifique’ and Monsieur Jones is ‘vraiment charismatique’.
It was a nice touch to invite the supporting French choir to sing a song with you, and the audience participation in ‘Vive la Compagnie’ was inspired. As one of our Rotarians said, ‘The concert raised the public profile of Rotary locally to new heights’. Many thanks for that.
On the other hand, you’ve left me with a problem – everyone wants to know when you’re coming back!
Very best wishes to you and the lads, and thanks again.
Alan Lucas
